Judith McKenzie McCuin
SPINNING WITH A PURPOSE
JUDITH MCKENZIE MCCUIN $175
FRIDAY, JULY 18, SATURDAY, JULY 19 &
SUNDAY, JULY 20, 9:30-4PM
In this workshop, students will learn to spin three very different types
of yarn. In each case, the fiber and the spinning yarn will be matched
to create the ideal yarn for the given project. Sample patterns will
be provided for students and worksheets for the different projects.
First day: spin worsted yarn to create the perfect sock yarn. Second
day: spin woolen yarn, medium weight for a fulled wool project. Third
day: spin a very fine yarn for lace weight, suitable for either a shawl
or a camisole. Wheel adjustment, how to sample and finishing techniques
will also be covered. STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO SPIN A CONTINUOUS THREAD
AND HAVE A GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR WHEEL. MATERIALS PROVIDED.
Judith Mackenzie McCuin has been a textile artist
for the last 30 years. She has taught all over the United States and
Canada. Her adventures in fiber include repairing the King of Afghanistan’s
carpet, leading tours in Turkey, raising sheep and managing a buffalo
ranch. Her depth of knowledge is incredible.
Beth Brown-Reinsel
THE DANISH SEJERØ SKRÅ-TRØJE
BETH BROWN-REINSEL $125
THURSDAY, JULY 31 & FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 9:30-4:30pm
This remarkable Danish garment was created at the end of the 1800’s.
It’s unusual in that most Danish knitting at that time was of
one color, while this skrå-trøje was knitted in navy and
white. In this class, a sampler will be knitted circularly to explore
the following techniques: working from a chart, working with two different
sizes of yarn, seam stitches, the main motif, the underarm half gusset,
working with a yarn in each hand or with two yarns in the left hand,
purling in pattern with two yarns on the wrong side of the garment,
creating a front slit, creating facings, a twined knitting braid on
the cuff, an overlapped cuff slit and assembly. Designing a skrå-trøje
and weaving yarns to eliminate long floats in the back of the work will
also be covered.
INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED KNITTING SKILLS REQUIRED. MUST BE EXPERIENCED
AT READING CHARTS AND USING DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES.
Beth Brown-Reinsel has been involved in many facets
of the fiber arts, but teaching is her passion. She developed and implemented
the correspondence course, “Traditional Ganseys” for The
Knitting Guild of America. She is author of Knitting Ganseys, published
by Interweave Press. Her articles have appeared in Vogue Knitting, Threads,
Cast On, Interweave Knits and Knitters magazines. She continues to design
for yarn companies, magazines, and for her own pattern line.
Sara Lamb
KNOTTED CUT PILE: NOT JUST FOR CARPETS!
SARA LAMB $140
SATURDAY, AUGUST 9 & SUNDAY AUGUST 10, 9:30-4:30pm
One of the most luxurious fabrics, knotted cut pile is surprisingly
simple to weave. Using modest equipment, and readily available tools
and materials learn to weave this ancient and beautiful technique long
used to make Oriental cut pile carpets. We will learn the process while
weaving a small sample project and discuss ways to incorporate this
technique into more than just rugs. All materials and use of loom provided.
BEGINNING WEAVING SKILLS REQUIRED.
Sara Lamb is a long time spinner, weaver and dyer. Her fascination
in knotted pile has turned into an addiction. Look for her work in Spin•Off,
Handwoven, Design Collections 5 & 13, Weaver’s and Shuttle,
Spindle and Dyepot. She is also the subject of the video Warp Painting
Plus.
Because Judith, Beth and Sara are
visiting instructors our rules on class sign up will be different. To
register in the class we must have full payment at the time of registration.
If for some reason you cannot take the class after signing up, a refund
will be made only if we can fill your space. We have made a commitment
